Switchboard Upgrades

Switchboard Upgrades in Perth's Southern Suburbs

A switchboard upgrade is the single best safety investment in an older home. Ceramic rewireable fuses protect the wiring — they do nothing to protect you. Modern RCDs cut power in under 30 milliseconds when current leaks to earth.

We do a lot of these in Spearwood, Coogee, Bibra Lake, Yangebup and South Lake, where original 1970s and 80s boards are still in service and simply can't carry today's loads: ducted aircon, induction cooktops, pool pumps and now EV chargers.

What's included

  • Full board changeover to a modern enclosure
  • RCBOs or RCDs on every final subcircuit
  • Circuit breakers sized to the cable
  • Surge protection device (optional)
  • Main switch and consumer mains upgrade
  • Circuit identification and labelling
  • Provision for future EV charger or solar
  • Compliance testing and certificate

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

  • Ceramic fuses with fuse wire
  • No RCDs (test buttons) on the board
  • Board is full — no room for new circuits
  • Nuisance tripping when appliances run together
  • Asbestos backing board or scorch marks

How it works

  1. 1

    Board assessment

We photograph and assess the existing board, mains and earthing.

  2. 2

    Fixed-price quote

You get one number covering the board, the RCDs, labelling and certification.

  3. 3

    Changeover day

Most changeovers are done in a day with a short planned outage. We'll tell you exactly how long.

What it costs

Price depends on the number of circuits, whether the consumer mains and earthing need upgrading, and whether asbestos backing needs removal. A typical residential changeover is quoted as a fixed price after we've seen photos of the board.

Licensing & compliance

We assess the installation against current WA requirements and the Wiring Rules, fit the RCD protection required for the work, and provide the applicable electrical safety documentation on completion.

Questions

Switchboard Upgrades — common questions

How long will my power be off?

Usually four to six hours for a standard residential changeover. We plan it around your day and can prioritise getting the fridge circuit back on.

Do I legally need RCDs?

WA has specific RCD requirements for residential properties, including before a home is sold or leased. We inspect the board, explain what applies to your property and quote any work needed.

Can you add EV charger capacity at the same time?

Yes, and it's the cheapest time to do it — we'll leave a spare way and correctly sized main switch ready for the charger.
